I didn’t watch the video (I am not much of a video-watcher; I like to just read things) but your examples brought to mind the song “If We Are the Body” by Casting Crowns. I have always loved the song, but one time I saw a youth group in church act it out and it was a pretty powerful skit.

I loved Whitney (maybe my age is showing), and I was so sad that she was gone from us.
But, since I know first hand from family members who are currently, or have struggled with issues requiring God’s intervention, and seeing the truth, that God does not always choose to “rescue” them in the way WE would have him do…he is always faithful.

My second thought after grief over Whitney was the same that I had when my mother died….
free at last…

She’s home now and out of pain.

What you’re illustrating here is exactly what I love so much about gospel music–life is hard, pain is real, but the joy of gospel music sounds so triumphant in the way that Christ is triumphant! I find comfort thinking of Whitney and others to know that despite the senseless death and loss, redemption still gets the last word. Thanks for this hope-filled perspective, Caryn!

Totally resonate with this, Caryn. While I was never a hug Whitney fan, I was telling my husband the other day that her music was part of the soundtrack of my life when I was growing up–background music, if you will. It was very sad to reflect on the struggle that was happening behind that beautiful voice. And like you, I was encouraged to hear Jesus’ name praised unequivocally at her memorial service. No way to answer the tough questions, but ultimately God will be glorified, and he is the king of redemption.

I agree that the reason to be creative is not so much for self-expression, though that sometimes is included.
The real reason is to give a voice of redemption and grace in a world that is fallen and dark. I’m not talking about saccharine-sweet words or actions that anyone can manufacture, but words and actions that come from the trenches, but that say: ‘You’re not alone. The world is dark, but there are pin-points of beauty, and here is one for you.’
